Inverse Operation: The operation that reverses the effect of another operation.  Example: Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Stat with 7, then add 3 we get 10, now subtract 3 and we get back to 7. 
​
Like Terms: Terms of an algebraic expression that have the same variables raised to the same exponents.
​
Equation: A mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions are equal.                                              4x = 16,                       a + 7 = 21
​
Improper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator.  I.E.: 5/4 or 9/9
​
Rational Number:  A number that can be written as a fraction, a/b where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0 
​
Expression:A mathematical phrase containing numbers, operations, and/or variables;   12+6,               18+ 3 x 4,                    8 + x,               6 x a – b
​
Additive Inverse: The opposite of a number.  The ADDITIVE INVERSE of 8 is -8.  The sum of additive inverses will always be 0.
​
Inequality: A mathematical sentence that compares expressions; It contains the symbols >, <, >, <
​
Simplest Form:  An Algebraic expression is in simplest form when it has no like terms and no parentheses. 6a +9a2 , 3t + 5
​
Difference:  The result when one number is subtracted from another number.  The difference of  4 and 3 is 4 - 3, or 1.
